Atomised aluminium for the chemical industry

Metallurgy

Atomised aluminium is used as a reducing agent for synthesising various metals (e.g. chromium) in the aluminothermic process.

Powder metallurgy

In the manufacture of preshaped parts from aluminium or aluminium alloys, metal powder (atomised aluminium plus additives) is moulded, or compacted. The sintering process designed to bond the metal particles takes place through subsequent hot pressing.

Steel production

Atomised aluminium is employed as deoxidant in the production of steel.

Welding

The high reaction heat produced by the reduction of metal oxides (such as iron oxide) with aluminium is used for welding and smelting purposes (thermite reaction).

Chemical industry

Large amounts of atomised aluminium are used for manufacturing Ziegler catalysts (trialkylaluminium), which are then employed in low-pressure polymerisation of ethylene and propylene and for synthesising long-chain alcohols. A less well known example of the use of atomised aluminium is in the production of aluminium chlorhydrate, which is an ingredient in many deodorants.
